Abstract
This study aimed to examine the influence of smartphone overdependence on anxiety and suicidality among multicultural adolescents in the midst of COVID-19, along with investigating gender differences. For this purpose, using data of 1,065 multicultural adolescents from the 16th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, research models were verified with Structural Equation Modeling and gender differences were analyzed with Latent Mean Analyses. Analysis results showed that multicultural adolescents¡¯ smartphone overdependence statistically significantly influences anxiety but not sucidality, and multicultural adolescents¡¯ anxiety fully mediates the influence of smartphone overdependence on suicidality. That is, the level of smartphone overdependence increased the level of anxiety and, in turn, increased the level of sucidality. Differences in path coefficients by gender were only found in the path between smartphone overdependence and suicidality, which showed that the level of smartphone overdependence increases suicidality only for male adolescents not for female adolescents. Finally, this study discussed intervention strategies in the midst of COVID-19 to prevent multicultural adolescents¡¯ smartphone overdependence and to promote their mental health.
